Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has welcomed a child protection pact with the United States (US), which has committed $3.5 million in assistance.

“The evil of human trafficking should be fought on all fronts. We should channel our collective efforts towards eradicating it,” said Aguirre.

The Secretary signed on Tuesday (April 11) the Child Protection Compact (CPC) with the US Embassy ChargĂ© d’Affaires Michael Klecheski.

“Anything that debases or dehumanizes the dignity of a person is an abomination that must end. Slavery and exploitation has no place in any society. Any act that which enslaves or exploits our
children magnifies the evil a hundredfold,” Aguirre said.

Under the agreement, the US Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP) will provide up to $3.5 million in foreign assistance to nongovernmental and international organizations to support the implementation of the CPC partnership.

Of the amount, $3 million will be allocated to support capacity-building related to improving the Philippines’ response to online exploitation of children.

Meanwhile, the remaining $500,000 will be used to support activities in connection with the country’s response to child labor trafficking.
