Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, President Rodrigo Duterte's running mate in the last elections, could be making a play for the Senate presidency, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said on Thursday.

Trillanes, in a television interview, pointed to what he called "a pattern of behavior" from senators who backed Cayetano in his bid for the Senate presidency before Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel wrested the leadership.

Pimentel is Duterte's partymate in the PDP-Laban.

“Probably, Senator Cayetano is making a move to topple Senator Pimentel as Senate President. That’s just a speculation,” Trillanes said.

He pointed to Senators JV Ejercito, Miguel Zubiri, and Richard Gordon.

“They were voting for Senator Cayetano and I suspect that all of these so-called grumblings are emanating from these senators aligned with Senator Cayetano,” Trillanes said.

"I wasn't born yesterday. I'm not a hardcore politician, but I can read these things," he added.

Ejercito earlier said “disagreements” among senators were not enough to cause Pimentel to lose his post.
