Barbie Forteza is one of GMA’s hottest stars today. She has slowly but steadily gained recognition when she starred in several independent films that earned her various awards for her acting prowess.
The 19-year-old fair-skinned beauty won the award for Best Supporting Actress in the 2014 Cinemalaya for the film ‘Mariquina,’ where she worked alongside Mylene Dizon and Ricky Davao. Gawad Urian Awards also bestowed her the same award in 2015 for the same film.
Just last year, Barbie earned her first international award in another independent film ‘Laut,’ which she starred in alongside the great Nora Aunor. She was given the award for Best Actress in the 36th Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal.
Currently, she is touted as GMA’s “Tween Queen,” a title she admitted has never made her feel comfortable. In fact, when Philippine Entertainment Portal interviewed her, the actress only had these words to say:
“E, hindi ko po alam… kasi parang ang dami na pong nag-aagawan diyan sa title na ’yan, e. Feeling ko naman… Well, hindi ko naman kine-claim kasi ang gusto ko naman po talaga, maging aktres.” Barbie said.
“Hindi ko naman… I’m not after any title naman. Gusto ko makilala ako bilang aktres na hindi lang basta artista na seventeen-year-old na teen star, ganyan,” she continued.
Barbie also revealed that she almost became an ABS-CBN actress, where she was supposed to portray an antagonist in the remake of ‘Annaliza.’ Ella Cruz was tapped to play the titular role.
Barbie said that Dawn Zulueta and Eric Quizon were also slated to be part of the teleserye. Maja Salvador was also tapped to play the teenage version of Annaliza. However, the project did not push through.
In 2009, the actress landed a role in GMA’s remake of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ as the young version of Rhian Ramos’ character. When the press asked if she had any regrets about her falied project with ABS-CBN, she said:
“Annaliza? Ah, dati, nanghinayang ako doon. [Pero] kasi parang right after na mapanuod ako sa Stairway, gusto nilang ituloy yung Annaliza na. So parang sa amin, kung kailan kami nakuha ng 7, at saka kami gusto ulit ng kabila.”
“So ang sa akin, doon na ako sa nagtiwala talaga sa akin. Hindi yung kung kailan may nakakita, at saka nila gusto. So ayun, nag-stick na ako doon.”
In 2013, ABS-CBN pushed through with ‘Annaliza’ and tapped Andrea Brillantes to portray the lead role while Kyline Alcantara played the role that was initially offered to Barbie.
