Someone had to say it, and former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz was in the best position to speak up.

Diaz gave Filipinos a reality check by saying that the country’s bet for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant Maxine Medina has a “one in a million” chance of winning the crown.

Diaz wasn’t being harsh, just heartbreakingly realistic.

The 65-year-old former beauty queen explained that the back-to-back win is simply not right because we’re the host country.

“Even if our candidate deserves it, it will be a shock. It will be a one-in-a-million chance,” she said in an interview with ABS-CBN’s Marie Lozano.

She also advised Filipinos to manage their expectations. “The last thing we should hope for is for our own candidate to win,” she added.

Diaz even said that it will be hard for Maxine to bag first place because it's going to be a “hometown decision.”

The wise words from Diaz came from a good place. She still wants to encourage Medina, especially since the latter has been heavily criticized online for her supposed lack of communication skills.
